Have you ever been to Mexico? Have you tried any of the “aguas” there? They are drinks flavoured with fresh ingredients such as limes, strawberries, hibiscus flowers and so on. A few days ago I realized I wasn’t going to get through the 5 pound bag of limes that I bought on sale, so decided to try making my own agua de limón. I brought it to thanksgiving dinner and it was a hit (or else everyone was being polite). Anyways, I enjoyed it.
Ingredients
1 cup fresh squeezed lime juice (about 16 limes)
1/4 to 1 cup of honey or other sweetener (depending if you want tart or sweet)
1 litre water
Ice
Optional flavourings: fresh mint, a pinch of salt (this will give it the traditional Mexican taste and make you think of margaritas), fresh ginger
Instructions
1. Cut limes in half and squeeze juice into dish, being careful to remove seeds.
2. Place honey or sugar to bottom of 1 litre container and add some boiled water. Stir to dissolve.
3. Add lime juice and ice to container. Fill with water.
4. This is now a concentrated lime drink. Fill a glass one quarter full with the concentrate, and top with cold water or soda water.
